About

HISTORY OF UBC TOASTMASTERS

Originally named Walter Gage Toastmasters, the UBC Toastmasters is a supportive community of individuals working together to improve professional and interpersonal communication and leadership skills through public speaking in a fun, relaxed environment. We are part of Toastmasters International, a non-profit organisation providing public speaking and leadership skills through a global network of clubs

Our club was founded in 1979 by Dr. Ralph Yorsh, DTM. While a lecturer at the University of British Columbia, Dr. Yorsh saw the need for improved communications skills for staff, faculty, and students. He named the club after the great communicator and late President of UBC, Walter Gage. Our club continues Dr. Yorsh's mission to provide a communication practice ground for UBC staff, faculty, and students, as well as the surrounding community.

What makes our club unique? The energy and enthusiasm of our members as well as our friendly, open atmosphere which foster a real investment in each other's personal development, both inside and outside of the club!
